World Environment Day

Happy World Environment Day! Being an ECO-certified tour operator, we take environmentalism pretty seriously here at Adrenalin Snorkel & Dive and in this blog post we shall give you a little insight on its history and significance!

History

In 1972 the UN General Assembly designated 5 June as World Environment Day and the first World Environment Day was celebrated in 5 June 194 with the slogan “Only One Earth”. World Environment Day was created to encourage awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Through the years World Environment Day has helped raise awareness on environmental issues such as marine pollution, overpopulation, global warming, wildlife crime, and sustainability.

Importance

World Environment Day is the United Nation’s primary tool for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues. Since its inception it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach and each year 143 countries participate in World Environment Day. World Environment Day is the “people’s day” for doing something to protect our environment. That “something” can be local, national or global. It can be a solo or group activity. Every bit counts.

Observance

World Environment Day is observed annually around certain theme, and held in a host country where the official celebrations take place. The theme is usually based on a particularly pressing environmental concern and the theme for 2019 is air pollution. This year’s host country is China, a country that has been plagued with issues of air pollution in recent times. The dual focus on the host country helps to highlight the challenges it faces and supports worldwide efforts to address these challenges.

Adrenalin’s initiatives

Being an ECO-certified operator (certified by Ecotourism Australia), Adrenalin has adopted many environmentally-friendly policies throughout the years including banning smoking on our day trips, reducing paper usage and reusing paper in the office, eliminating the use of plastic bags by using tote bags and reducing single-use items on our trips.
